Pet Tech Subscription Requirements Database

Connected pet products use subscriptions very differently. This matrix separates products where recurring service is required for the core connected function from products where paid service is optional—or absent.

How to read this database
Required means the product needs an active recurring plan for the core connected function listed. Optional means core operation remains available but paid service unlocks additional features. None means the core smart/access function works without recurring service.

Why “subscription required” needs a precise definition

A product can physically operate without a subscription while losing the feature that makes it “smart.” A GPS collar is the clearest example: Fi and Tractive can contain electronics without an active plan, but their cellular location service depends on recurring membership. By contrast, a SureFeed microchip feeder performs its core identity-controlled access locally.

Pet cameras occupy the middle. Furbo documents free core functions on standalone models while reserving cloud history and advanced services for Furbo Nanny. Whisker likewise keeps core Litter-Robot app features free while selling Whisker+ for deeper historical insights.

Methodology

We classify only current manufacturer/support documentation reviewed on September 15, 2026. We do not infer subscription status from retailer listings. The database focuses on whether recurring service is required for the product’s core connected or access-control function, not whether optional premium features exist.

Product plans change. If a manufacturer changes its policy, use our corrections process to flag it and we will refresh the source-linked row.
